Bujumbura Marathon 1st edition, 2014

The Bujumbura Marathon 1st edition took place on 31st august 2014 at “Jardin Public”-the contestants’ departure and arrival. Three races on the agenda were a half marathon (21km), 10 km and 3 km.

The theme itself gave sense to the event ” I run for fraternity, I love Bujumbura”. Both countries of East African Community wish to strengthen their existing fraternal relationship through the exhibition their citizens’ talents.

Famous athletes such as Mr.Wilson kipsang- the World Marathon Holder, Mr Wifred Bungei- the 800m olympic champion did not miss the exciting event. These athletes appreciated their brothers -young Burundian athletes- and provided them with enough athletic skills during clinic session.

Bumoc (Bujumburaton organizing committee) within which the National Tourism office played the role of secretariat has been satisfied with the number of participants. Based on the last statistics from Bumoc secretariat, 750 professional athletes as well as 5 00 amateurs have taken part in the Bujumbura Marathon first edition, 2014.

The event ended by the award ceremony where the first 3 athletes- all Burundians- from each discipline-received respectively medals of Gold, bronze and silver.
